Green Belt and a Tip

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

緑帯になったんです!ぼうもパッスしました!

I became a green belt. I also passed bou (quarter staff).

Tom’s untopical tip: put a “TODO” in your source tree at every point where you have an actionable (make a central file for those without a place). Then you can grep -R TODO * | wc -l to check the general status of the project.

All those そして, it’s like I’m five again; beginning every sentence with and then.

Translation (as absolutely literal as possible, because I’m like that):

From 9.30 till 10.30 I went to CASS2. It was interesting, therefore it was enjoyable.

After CASS2 I did CASS2’s (course)work. Then I ate lunch and watched Onegai Teacher.

Then I studied Japanese.

Everyday since Wednesday I practice with my tonfa. I love them. Tomorrow I will study them with kobudo.

Yellow Belt

Saturday, March 4th, 2006

やった!

(I did it!)

今はこうしょくのおびをあります!

(Now I have a yellow belt!)

Technically I just have the certificate. I’ll get the belt on Wednesday (水曜日にあります).

今日のアーチェリがファンです。BUSAですから四人をいました。

(Today’s archery was fun. BUSA is on, so there were four people there.)

Recent Conquests

Monday, February 6th, 2006

Sorry, it’s an unordered list. Recently, I have been:

  • Installing Gentoo Linux twice. It’s rather educational. I’ve learnt a lot since installing it.
  • Recompiling my kernel about ten times (before this week I had recompiled it unsuccessfully once, when I was still on SuSE – a long time ago).
  • Finding a pretty, functional, and hasn’t-crashed-yet music player for *nix (that word looks like a pointer to my C-addled brain): amaroK. I’m impressed at how useful it is. Its only fault is that it’s yet another processor-sapping GUI application.
  • Starting the long path of relearning C (although I must say I never learnt it very well the first time round). I wrote a simple linked list data type and a few functions to do things to it. C is pretty much useful only for writing kernels, things that need to be super-fast, and compilers; it’s important to know how C works though. Like Lisp, it’s a different way of doing things. Also, I’m becoming interested in compilers; kernels too, in fact.
  • Getting a badge in archery for having a top score of over 300 – 320, which I shot last Saturday.
  • Trying out fencing. It was enjoyable, but I already do hundred and one other things, so I’ve decided not to carry on with it.
  • Discovering that making ALSA work was as simple as /etc/init.d/alsasound start.
  • Completing the sai level 1 syllabus. I’ve almost completed the yellow belt syllabus too, but the rolls are a little tricky (I need to practice breaking ground strangles too). The grading is the fourth of March.

Shooting and sai

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

In my second ever tournament I got 255 266. That’s down 9 up 2 from last time. But this time was the second time I’d shot with a stabiliser and a shoelace so I was still getting used to that. I’d like to do better in the novice tournament on Saturday, but we’ll see.

We got our sai today in Jujutsu and learnt some more of the syllabus. They’re quite a fun weapon.

I haven’t seen a lot of people at Jujutsu since the grading. It’s odd. Just like Joe described after the Jujutsu meal. It’s not a bad thing, but there are some people I hope haven’t left for good.

Afterwards, we went to Delius. We discovered that Andrew came first of the novices (the archers were still there) and had some food.

And now I must leave. I’m seeing Murderball with Davina.

White belt

Saturday, November 26th, 2005

I got my white belt in Jujutsu! I passed nunchaku level one in kobudo too.

Everybody passed. So all the ungraded beginners are now white belts.

Hooray!

Congratulations everybody.
